Best ski resorts in the Pyrenees: complete comparison guide

Which ski area to choose in the French Pyrenees? Comparison of the best resorts by profile: family, expert, budget, snow reliability and access.

Updated on 21 April 2026

The French Pyrenees are home to more than 30 ski resorts spread across 5 departments, from the Basque Country to Catalonia. Choosing the right resort depends on your profile: skill level, budget, driving distance, children, or the need for guaranteed powder. This guide ranks the best resorts by criteria to help you decide.

Large resorts: domains over 60 km of pistes

Saint-Lary-Soulan — The benchmark of the French Pyrenees

100 km of pistes | 1,680–2,515 m | Hautes-Pyrénées

The largest Pyrenean resort in terms of ski area. Saint-Lary combines altitude, modern infrastructure (3 gondolas, 850 snow guns) and a complete four-season offering with its thermal spa. The ideal resort if you want everything in one place: beginners, experts, snowpark, cross-country skiing, winter hiking.

Grand Tourmalet — The largest ski area

100 km of pistes | 1,800–2,500 m | Hautes-Pyrénées

Combining La Mongie and Barèges, Grand Tourmalet is the most extensive ski domain in the Pyrenees. Excellent snowfall thanks to altitude, authentic mountain atmosphere in Barèges. Less modernised than Saint-Lary but wilder terrain and spectacular views.

  • Day pass (adult): ~€38
  • Distance from Toulouse: 2h30

Peyragudes — Two slopes, one unique experience

60 km of pistes | 1,600–2,460 m | Hautes-Pyrénées / Haute-Garonne

The only Pyrenean resort straddling two departments, linked by a panoramic gondola. Highlight: the Col de Peyresourde, a legendary Tour de France climb, accessible by bike in summer. Best for intermediate skiers seeking authenticity.

High-altitude resorts: guaranteed snow

Piau-Engaly — The highest, the most snow-sure

65 km of pistes | 1,850–2,574 m | Hautes-Pyrénées

With a base at 1,850 m, Piau-Engaly is the Pyrenean resort offering the best snow guarantees. Ideal for skiers who don’t want to risk arriving on bare or artificially covered runs. Season regularly extended to May.

Pyrénées 2000 / Font Romeu — The sunniest

42 km of pistes | 1,800–2,213 m | Pyrénées-Orientales

300 days of sunshine per year: Font Romeu is the ideal ski destination for those who want to ski and sunbathe simultaneously. Night skiing twice a week, excellent Nordic domain (45 km of cross-country tracks), accessible from Barcelona in 2h. Less vertical drop than the Hautes-Pyrénées resorts but an unmatched overall experience.

Family-friendly and affordable resorts

Guzet-Neige — Closest to Toulouse

35 km of pistes | 1,400–2,100 m | Ariège

The Ariège resort is the most accessible from Toulouse (1h50) and one of the most affordable in the Pyrenees (day pass ~€31). Non-commercial family atmosphere, quality cross-country skiing, unspoilt Garbet valley. Perfect for spontaneous weekends from the Pink City.

Cauterets / Cirque du Lys

25 km of pistes | 1,450–2,350 m | Hautes-Pyrénées

Thermal resort and skiing in an exceptional natural setting. The Cirque du Lys ski area is compact but well-designed, with very good snow thanks to the altitude. The thermal town of Cauterets in the valley offers authentic Belle Époque charm and varied accommodation.

Artouste — Skiing and a mountain lake

25 km of pistes | 1,825–2,440 m | Pyrénées-Atlantiques

A little-known resort in Béarn, famous for its high-altitude lake and mountain railway (the highest in Europe). Family-friendly ski area with one of the most beautiful panoramic descents in the Pyrenees. Ideal for skiers looking for somewhere off the beaten track.
