Piau-Engaly: skiing above the clouds in the Hautes-Pyrénées

Guide to Piau-Engaly, the highest ski resort in the French Pyrenees at 1,850 m. Ski area, exceptional snowfall, hiking and access from Lourdes.

Updated on 13 April 2026

Piau-Engaly is the highest ski resort in the French Pyrenees, perched at 1,850 m altitude at the head of the Barrancoueu valley in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Its exceptional snowfall — among the best in the massif — and its unspoilt atmosphere make it a favourite destination for skiers who prioritise snow quality over resort size.

A record altitude in the Pyrenees

At 1,850 m at the base of the slopes and 2,574 m at the summit, Piau-Engaly has a vertical drop of 724 m — one of the largest of any Pyrenean resort. This altitude guarantees:

  • Fresh snow even late in the season (the domain often stays open until April–May)
  • Lower temperatures that preserve snow quality throughout the day
  • Generous sunshine thanks to the south-facing orientation at the top of the domain

The ski area

  • 18 ski lifts
  • Min altitude: 1,850 m — Max altitude: 2,574 m

Signature runs

  • La Moraine (red, 4 km) — the longest descent in the domain, varied terrain and stunning views
  • La Neste (black, 800 m vertical) — for expert skiers, north-facing aspect keeps the powder
  • L’Espiau (blue, 3.2 km) — ideal for progression, returns directly to the village

Winter activities

Freestyle and snowpark

The Piau Park is set at mid-mountain: tables, boardercross and a beginner zone for younger riders.

Piau-Engaly is an outstanding base for ski touring thanks to its proximity to the Pyrenees National Park. Several marked itineraries reach passes above 2,500 m.

Family-friendly circuits from the resort with views over the Néouvielle Reserve. Snowshoe hire on site.

Sledging

An 800 m toboggan run accessible without a ski pass. Priced per run or per hour.

Piau-Engaly in summer
